Student Financial Assistance Program Changes 2009-2010:

    The Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loans Program offers a needs based supplement to your existing resources to help you fund your education.

    Funding for your Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan is provided jointly by the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan, therefore only one application is required. Saskatchewan Student Financial Assistance Branch is responsible for the processing of your loan application.

    The National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) is responsible for the disbursement of both federal and provincial funds as well as the repayment of your Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan.

    Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour Recognizes Veterans
    The new Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour recognizes Saskatchewan’s returning soldiers and the families of injured and fallen soldiers.  

    Student Financial Assistance Branch offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to help reduce education costs.

    Students may be eligible for scholarship taxation exemption under certain conditions, including students who study outside Canada.  The Canada Revenue Agency Website provides additional information on Students and Income Tax

    Important steps in planning and financing your post-secondary education with an overview of the Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loans Program for the 2009-2010 year.

    Make informed decisions by knowing what options are available.

    There are several criteria students must meet and maintain to satisfy eligibility requirements for student loan funding.

    Updates and changes for the new 2009-2010 loan year.

    For courses with a start date between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010.
    Apply early. You may apply for assistance before you are officially accepted into your program, but not more than four months before your program start date.

    Students applying for financial assistance are placed into one of four categories and financial need as well as any benefits are based on those categories.

    If you meet the eligibility requirements, your application for student financial assistance will be processed, and you will receive assistance based on your financial need.

    Changes to the student financial assistance program will  improve access and help students and families manage the cost of post-secondary education.

    Once your application has been assessed, you will receive a package of information that will include your student assistance documents, instructions on how to negotiate your documents and your assistance assessment details.

    Maintaining your eligibility for student financial assistance involves meeting certain standards during each study period.

    While you're a full-time student your current student loan and any past student loans are interest-free and do not require repayment.

    Effective June 13, 2008, if you are a Canadian Forces Reservist who has interrupted full-time studies to serve on designated operations, you may no longer be required to pay interest or make payments on your Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan if you meet the eligibility criteria.

    When you're in your last year of studies there are some other things you need to know about your loans.

    If you plan on studying part-time (between 20 and 59 percent) and require financial assistance, you will need to apply for a Part-time Canada Student Loan.

    The Provincial Training Allowance (PTA) provides income support to low-income students enrolled in approved basic education, Workforce Development initiatives or in Quick Skills Training which are not approved for student loan funding.

    The Graduate Retention Program (GRP) is a refundable income tax credit to rebate up to $20,000 of tuition fees paid by eligible graduates. This initiative replaces the previous Graduate Tax Exemption beginning January 1, 2008.

    From 2000-2007, the Government of Saskatchewan had two previous graduate tax benefit programs for graduates from post-secondary programs.
