Targeted Initiatitive for Older Workers

 

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour is working in partnership with the Federal government to deliver a two year initiative to help older workers be reintegrated into the workforce.

Eligible Communities and People:

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour will work with community organizations and partners to develop proposals based on the needs of older workers and their communities.

To be eligible for TIOW, communities must be experiencing ongoing high unemployment and/or a high reliance on a single employer or industry affected by downsizing or a closure(s).

Census metropolitan areas with a population greater than 250,000 are not eligible for TIOW programming.

In order to participate, older workers must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be 55 – 64 years of age (50 – 54 years of age may also be accepted);
  • Be unemployed;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Lack skills needed for successful integration into new employment; and
  • Live in an eligible community.

Participating Communities:

The following communities will be providing programs under the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers.

1. Regina - SIAST Wascana Campus

Experience Counts! offers unemployed persons in Regina and area assistance in finding employment.  SIAST Wascana Campus instructors will actively assist participants in finding employment.  This will include individual career counselling, resume and portfolio development, and group workshops.  Participants will develop and implement an action plan that will focus on long-term employment.

This project is completed.

2. Saskatoon - SIAST Kelsey Campus

Experience Counts offers unemployed persons assistance in finding employment. In this project, you will receive individual career planning, resume development, interview practice and group workshops.

This project is completed

3. Moose Jaw - SIAST Palliser Campus

Experience Counts project offers unemployed persons assistance in finding employment. Participants will receive individual career planning, resume development, interview practice and group workshops.

4. Prince Albert - SIAST Woodland Campus

Experience Counts project offers unemployed persons assistance in finding employment. Participants will receive group workshops, individual career planning, interview practice and resume development.

This project is scheduled to run from January 21, 2008 - March 14, 2008. For more information, please contact Garry Whitley at (306) 953-5538.

5. Nipawin - Cumberland Regional College

Experience Matters! offers unemployed persons in Melfort, Tisdatle, Hudson Bay, Nipawin, and area assistance in finding employment. Cumberland College instructors and counsellors will actively assist participants with individual career counselling, resume and portfolio development and group workshops. Participants will develop and implement an action plan that will focus on long-term employment.

6. Yorkton - Parkland Regional College

A Wealth of Experience! offers unemployed persons between the ages of 55-64 assistance in finding employment. Participants will receive individual career counselling, and resume and portfolio development in order to develop and implement an action plan that will focus on long-term employment.

7. Warman - Prairie West Regional College

The "Back to Work" project offers unemployed people between the ages of 55-64 assistance in finding employment.  Participants will receive individual career planning, resume development and interview practice.

Project Activities:

Each participating community will have it’s own activities.  These may include activities such as:

  • Vocational and/or learning assessments;
  • Peer mentoring;
  • Basic skills upgrading;
  • Skills training;
  • Work experience;
  • Preparation for self employment;
  • Direct marketing to employers
  • Resume and interview skills; and
  • Counselling.

Income Support:

All participants will receive income support while in the project.  The income support may be in the form of:

  • Allowances – participants who are engaged primarily in developmental activities such as assessment and skills upgrading
  • Wages – if a project includes a community based work experience module, the participants will receive a wage
  • Wage Subsidies – if a project includes an employer-based work experience module, the employer may receive a wage subsidy.
